Madurai is one of the ancient cities of south India with a glorious history. It is an industrial and tourist hub with a large literate population. It is, in fact, the second largest corporation city by area and third largest city by population in Tamil Nadu. It is bounded on the north by the districts of Dindigul, Tiruchirapalli and on the east by Sivagangai, on the west by Theni and south by Virudhunagar. The district is highly urbanized, and has a flourishing textile industry, with food and rubber processing units alongside an expansive education system.
